Evanston Hospital – Clinical Laboratory
The complete renovation of Evanston Hospital’s 55,000 sf clinical laboratory involved a multiple-phase approach within the same footprint. In addition to central receiving and the core laboratory, the scope included microbiology, histology, and molecular lab spaces and a blood & stem cell donor area, staff lounge, and administrative space.
The core laboratory was moved and integrated with both central receiving and the referral lab and includes several office areas and the implementation of two new automated processing lines. Hospital staff had used the existing laboratory for 20 years before its last renovation.
The lab now accommodates new automated testing equipment, reducing specimens’ incubation time by a day and enabling faster turnaround. The recent renovation also improves environmental quality significantly from the previous outdated space. The entire phased renovation allowed daily lab activities to continue uninterrupted throughout the construction schedule.
