Community Health Research Center

Conceptual design for medical clinic, research center, and community gathering space
Chicago, Illinois

ESA’s conceptual design for a health/research and community outreach center in Chicago’s Austin neighborhood provides a flexible framework for research; is open and inviting to members of the community; and creates a healthy environment with minimal carbon consumption.

The overriding concept is straightforward: an elegant glass box with an uncomplicated structure. The program is stacked on three levels, with the ground floor being the most public and the top having restricted public access.

A dynamic two-story space on the first floor overlooks an entry garden and provides space for meetings and community outreach events. Clinical areas are located on the second level, and research and administrative spaces are on the third.
