Orthopaedic and Spine Institute

Skokie, Illinois

Designed for both outpatient and inpatient procedures, including joint replacement, fracture care, and complex spine surgeries, this addition to Skokie Hospital includes an additional eight operating rooms, a 10-bay PACU, 24 prep/recovery bays, and an expansion of the existing waiting room, staff locker rooms, and Sterile Processing Department.

The 26,000-square-foot addition was built on the roof of the existing hospital, requiring reinforcement of existing foundations. In addition, the surgical area has a 23-foot clearance for routing MEP lines from the adjacent mechanical room – aligning with the new roof on the 4th floor of the adjacent medical office building. The horizontal expression of the glass façade replicates the existing curtain walls and bridge enclosures connecting the existing precast concrete-enclosed buildings on campus.
