Misericordia Heart of Mercy Skilled Care Facility
Interior architecture for new 125-bed pediatric residential skilled nursing facility
Chicago, Illinois
Misericordia serves children and adults with developmental and physical disabilities. ESA served as the interior architect for this new 80,000 sf, 125-bed pediatric residential skilled care facility.
Whereas skilled nursing homes often look like institutions, Misericordia looks and feels like a home. ESA went to great lengths to disguise the facility's clinical functions, organizing the residential wings into six different "neighborhoods" that each have a welcoming gateway and unique color scheme. The building also features activity rooms, classrooms, a small chapel, administrative offices, and a hydrotherapy pool. An impressive rotunda is used for social gatherings.
