Glenbrook Hospital Bed Tower Addition

150,000 sf expansion/renovation of clinical and public areas completed 2002
Glenview, Illinois

Completed in 2002, ESA’s $35 million expansion of Glenbrook Hospital included 125,000 sf of new clinical and public spaces, as well as the renovation of an additional 25,000 sf.

Additions include a new surgical suite with eight operating rooms, a 12-bay Post-Anesthesia Care Unit, an 18-bed Same-Day Surgery Unit, a Gastroenterology Laboratory, a 12-bed Intensive Care Unit, and a new 24-bed Medical Surgery Inpatient Unit. ESA also designed a new lobby and waiting area with interior landscaping, skylights, numerous water features, and other visitor amenities, which help integrate Glenbrook’s public areas with the design standards of NorthShore University HealthSystem.

The expansion of the surgical departments was planned in two stages so as to ensure continual operation throughout construction. ESA worked closely with hospital staff, especially nurses, in the design, to optimize patient flow and nurse accessibility.

The Medical/Surgery Inpatient Unit now includes 14,500 sf for 24 private rooms and adaptive support areas for telemetry and critical care. All of the rooms feature wall-to-wall windows, built-in armoires, head wall units with oak covers, and spacious accessible bathrooms. Finishes such as oak flooring, plant shelves, artwork, and family seating help create an environment of reassurance and warmth. Two corner VIP rooms have upgraded finishes and views of the campus’s pond.

The Intensive Care Unit occupies the top floor of the new patient wing, also designed by ESA. Encompassing 9,000 sf, the department’s 12 patient rooms (expandable to 14) are grouped around a central nurses' station from which patients are visible at all times. The entire unit is adjacent to a new patient elevator core providing immediate access to the surgery suite on the ground floor.
