This week, Eckenhoff Saunders Architects welcomes Joan Suchomel to the team as Principal Architect. Joan brings a wealth of experience and insight to Eckenhoff Saunders’ healthcare planning and design efforts. A former director of Skidmore, Owings & Merrill’s (SOM’s) Chicago office and Senior Medical Planner for SOM’s Health + Science practice, healthcare architecture has been the primary focus of Joan’s career for three decades. Major past projects include master planning and facility design for a 1.3 million SF facility at Cleveland Clinic’s Weston, Florida campus; a 1.5 million SF master plan for The Christ Hospital in Cincinnati, Ohio; and a 4 million SF master plan for Cincinnati Children’s Hospital.
Extremely active in professional and community spheres, Joan is the 2016 President of the AIA Academy of Architecture for Health, as well as a regular participant and speaker at events including the International Summit & Exhibition on Health Facility Planning, Design and Construction; Cleveland Clinic Patient Experience Summit; and the Chicago Council on Global Affairs International Women’s Day Global Health Symposium.
Joan holds a Master of Architecture degree from University of Wisconsin‐Milwaukee and a Bachelor of Arts degree from Iowa State University. She also recently completed a Certificate in Strategic Leadership at Loyola University.
