Evanston Hospital
Masterplan of campus in historic suburban community
Evanston, Illinois
Evanston Hospital is a nationally recognized institution that has served Chicago's North Shore for more than 100 years. ESA developed a multi-phased masterplan for campus redevelopment that included a new three-level atrium lobby, a main hospital entry, a 1,650-car parking structure, and a research and administrative building.
Hospital circulation paths and multiple entrances now converge in the dramatic atrium lobby, which serves as the hospital's main conduit for traffic flow. Staff and visitors enter the hospital from the garage on different levels designated for outpatient, inpatient, visitor, staff, or physician use.
A major challenge in the redevelopment was to avoid overwhelming the surrounding neighborhood's residential scale. To achieve this, ESA maximized the parking structure's setback and positioned one half of its seven levels below grade. ESA has amended the hospital's masterplan to incorporate further campus expansion, including the new Walgreen Research & Administrative Building and the Kellogg Cancer Care Center.
