One of Evanston Hospital’s most unique features is its location in the heart of a quiet residential neighborhood. Therefore, the surrounding community factored prominently in ESA’s design for a much-needed parking structure. ESA set the new 1,650-car garage a considerable distance from nearby residences and placed half of its seven levels (620,000 sf) below ground. A combination of brick, stone, and copper blends the facade into the rest of the campus and masks cars with glass-enclosed stairwells.
The new garage serves as a conduit for traffic flow throughout the hospital by directing visitors to various entrances. Now, a patient can park and proceed directly to her appointment. There is dedicated access for physicians, staff, and visitors, and parking and drop-off for the Emergency Department.
