Northwestern Memorial Healthcare
Childcare Center and Parking Facility

13-story mixed-use facility
Chicago, Illinois

At 13 stories, ESA’s design of Northwestern Memorial Healthcare’s new childcare and parking facility references the architectural language of the health system’s Streeterville campus.

Occupying the first two floors at 43,000 sf, the Childcare Center is the largest facility of its kind in Chicago. Its design is rooted in nature and emphasizes learning and discovery. In addition to classrooms, an atelier, and flexible learning spaces, the center features a multi-story atrium for library and music programs.

With a bridge that traverses the space and cantilevered windows that overlook the activity below, the atrium serves as the heart of the program. Reading niches, colorful portals into classrooms, and child-scaled elements show a special consideration for children’s sense of security and perspective.

Two outdoor play areas and a rooftop garden encourage nature-based play. Security is paramount, with multiple levels of safeguards as parents move further into the space.

The facility also provides 500,000 sf of parking for 1,100 cars, as well as bike commuter facilities.

Anticipated to be LEED Silver certified, the project’s sustainable strategy maximizes daylight and greenery. It also features geothermal heating and cooling, advanced temperature control, and fresh air exchange.
